The first step to getting your new invention idea to market is to write your idea down! Make sure to use a notebook or journal with stitched-in pages so pages cannot be added or removed after the fact. Write your idea down in full detail making sure to use ink and covering the whole page, leaving no margins anywhere on the page. This is to ensure there is no room to add anything at a later date. Make sure you date each page and write on both sides of each page.
Document every action you take regarding your idea including every phone call you make and every conversation you have in chronological order. Make drawings and sketches of your invention idea in the notebook also. Write about any research you do on your product. Staple any receipts for materials you buy for your product in the notebook. You can keep this notebook as a journal throughout your invention process. By documenting every step you make your are also protecting yourself in case someone else tries to rip off your idea.
After you are done writing down your initial invention idea, get someone you trust to sign a non-disclosure agreement (this protects your idea so they can’t steal it, not that they would since you trust them) then read, sign and date the notebook. Use this notebook to keep track of all your progress, and have them read, sign and date frequently throughout the process.
