Exclusive interview with Lisa Druxman, owner of Stroller Strides.
1. What is your business? I am the founder and CEO of Stroller Strides, the country’s largest fitness program for moms. We offer both pre and postnatal fitness classes.
2. When did you start your business? Aug 2001
3. How much money did you invest initially into your business? Probably no more than a few thousand dollars at first. Since then, hundreds of thousands.
4. Who helped you build your business? My team who are all passionate about creating career opportunities that are supportive of motherhood.
5. How did you know where to find the answers for the things you didn’t know? I asked, the internet, consultants, you name it.
6. What are your favorite online resources? Sba.gov, score, entrepreneur.com
7. Did you have any setbacks? How did you overcome them? Many from cash flow to trademark infringement to franchise transition. We take it a day at a time and stay focused on our goal.
8. How long did it take for you to reach the million dollar mark? Maybe four years.
9. How has your life changed now that you have a successful business? Well, it’s definitely busier. My life is very full and moving from sunrise to bedtime. I am very efficient and don’t waste time on things don’t matter. My first priorities are my marriage, my kids and my business. If I can outsource the rest, I do.
10. How do you balance being a mom and running your business? Read above. The key is staying focused on what’s important. I focus on improvement each day rather than perfection. I know my inbox will never be empty. I make taking care of myself a big priority too. That recharges my personal battery.
11. What is the one thing you have indulged in just because you can? A housekeeper
12. For those moms who are determined to make it big, but have very little money to invest in a start-up business, tell them what your 2 biggest secrets are to making millions?
1) If you don’t have to spend it, don’t.
2) You can’t work on your business when you work in your business. Instead of pocketing profits, invest in your company.
3) Don’t focus on making millions. Focus on doing an excellent job at what you love.
13. What sources do you know about where moms can find funding for their business ventures? SBA
14. How would you tell a mom to go about researching whether or not she has a million dollar idea, or a profitable business idea for that matter? Google. See what’s out there already and how your business idea is either better or more unique than the competition. You have to create a budget to see if the business makes financial sense. Increase expenses beyond what you expect and decrease revenues from what you hope and see if it can still work.
